Invitation - Current Legal and Political Turmoil in Israel: Judicial Reforms and Human Rights Violations

For the last few months, Israel has been facing intense strikes and protests against the new Israeli government’s planned judicial overhaul. Our Middle East Research Group invites you to join us at the debate on the current protests, contestations regarding the nature of the Israeli regime, and long-standing critique of Israeli policies towards the Palestinians.

According to scholars and political analysts, the proposed reform would severely curtail the authority and autonomy of the Supreme Court and remove judicial checks on the government’s power. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s opponents but also many Western media and politicians warned that the planned overhaul could imperil the democratic character of Israel. At the same time, Israel has been criticized for a long time by a number of NGOs and experts for gross violations of Palestinians’ human rights that, according to several Palestinian, Israeli, and international organizations, constitute the crime of apartheid.
