The Annual Conference of the Peace Research Center Prague will take place on 21. 4. 2023 in room No. 38 at the Faculty of Law, Charles University (nám. Curieových 901/7, Praha 1). Come join us for a day full of debates, featuring some of the world’s leading scholars in international relations and security - Sir Lawrence Freedman, Nina Tannenwald, and many other distinguished guests!

This event is organized by Peace Research Center Prague (PRCP), together with the Institute of Political Studies, Charles University; Political Science Club, the Common Law Society, and Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP).

11:10– 12:45 panel I - War in Ukraine: A Year On.

  • Speakers: Sir Lawrence Freedman (King’s College London), Nina Tannenwald (Brown University), Harald Müller (PRIF HSFK/PRCP), Hanna Notte (VCDNP)

  • Moderator: Michal Smetana (PRCP)

    One year since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Europe’s most destructive war since WWII continues apace. For this panel, we invited four very distinguished scholars to discuss the current developments as well as scenarios for the future. Among other things, they will unpack the military strategies of both sides, the risk of nuclear use, Kremlin’s views, and the implications of the war for Europe, Russia, and the global order.

13:45 - 15:00 PANEL II: Authoritarianism and Its Discontents in the Middle East and North Africa.

This panel discusses the recent developments in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. It specifically engages states’ authoritarian practices as well as ways in which the undemocratic rule is challenged by citizens and various movements. Discussing cases ranging from Tunisia to Iran, the panel provides a critical reappraisal of the current political and social predicament in the region.

15:05 – 16:50 PANEL III: The EU NPD Consortium: Initiatives and Opportunities for Students and Next Gen Scholars.

  • Speakers: Paola Tessari (Istituto Affari Internazionali), Federica Dall’Arche (VCDNP)

This panel offers an opportunity to learn about the work of the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium and Network! highlighting its activities dedicated to the next generation. This session will also provide information on additional opportunities and initiatives in the field of arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament.
